The area of Ballarat West is 135 square kilometers. It includes the suburb of Alfredton, along with the northern and western sections of Ballarat, Delacombe, Nerrina, Sebastopol and Wendouree.

Ballarat West has few rural areas. It covers all of Ballarat north of the Ballarat Burrumbeet Road and west of Drummond Street. It includes the suburbs of Ballarat North, Black Hill, Wendouree, Alfredton, Redan and Sebastopol.

The temperature of Ballarat West varies 10 to 25 degree Celsius. The maximum temperature of summer is 25 degree Celsius and minimum temperature of winter is 10 degree Celsius. The mean annual rainfall is 705 mm, with August being the wettest month.
