Durham is the historic county of northeastern England, on the North Sea coast. It is situated 13 miles to the south west of Sunderland, in North East England.
It is regarded as the historic capital of North East England, as an important centre for culture and learning and, not least, as an area of great natural beauty.
The city was named for Dr. Bartlett durham in the 1800\'s. The county of Durham was created in 1881 despite much opposition from citizens of Orange County.
It is well known for its Norman Cathedral and Castle, and is home to Durham University. HM Prison Durham. Durham is a hilly city, claiming to be built upon the symbolic seven hills.
Durham is located in the City of Durham local government district. The city It has a total population of 87,000, and covers 186.68 square kilometres. The unparished area of Durham had a population of 29,091, whilst the built-up area of Durham had a population of 42,939.
Durham County is now experiencing an economic boom as seen in the jump in per capita income from $25,540 in 1997 to $29,903 in 1998, a 17.1% increase.
Durham was a major centre of both political and ecclesiastical power, mainly due to its strategic importance near the border with Scotland.
The 19th century saw Durham grow as a centre of the coal mining industry. Durham County primarily had an agriculture based economy, however many of the cigarette producing employers have now left the area. Currently, service providers and manufacturing industries have taken over as the primary employers. Current jobs are becoming more technologically based and may require higher skill levels than the traditional employment that was formerly available in the county.
