Liverpool is a city in North West England, along the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. It is lying at the mouth of the Mersey River, 88 miles west-southwest of Halifax. In 1996 it amalgamated with Queens Municipal District to form the Region of Queens Municipality. Today the population of Liverpool is 439,000.
In the 16th century Ireland was still Liverpool main trading partner. Liverpool began to grow rapidly in the late 17th century with the growth of English colonies in North America and the West Indies. In the 18th century sugar refining became an important industry in Liverpool. Liverpool officially became a city in 1880. In the later 20th century industries in Liverpool included engineering, cement manufacture, sugar refining and flour milling.
In 1974, Liverpool became a metropolitan district within the newly created metropolitan county of Merseyside, it had previously been in Lancashire.
Liverpool is governed by Liverpool City Council, one of five councils within the Metropolitan county of Merseyside, and is one of England core cities and its fifth most populous - 441,477 in 2002, with 816,000 in the Liverpool Urban Area, which includes suburbs on the Liverpool side of the Mersey but not those on the Wirral.
Liverpool has three universities, the University of Liverpool, Liverpool Hope University and Liverpool John Moores University.
In Liverpool primary and secondary education is available in various forms supported by the state include secular, Church of England, Jewish, and Roman Catholic. Islamic education is available at primary level, but there is currently no secondary provision.
