Norwich is a city, administrative and historic country town of Norfolk,in East Anglia, in Eastern England. It ia situated along the River Wensum above its confluence with the River Yare, about 100 miles northeast of London.
Norwich was founded in 1659 by settlers from Old Saybrook led by Major John Mason and Reverend James Fitch. Norwich started as a small Saxon settlement north of the river Wensum. In time it grew into a town, perhaps because of its situation on a river.
In the 18th century wool manufacture was still the main industry in Norwich. Wool was exported to North America. There were many imports into Norwich including tea, silk and porcelain from the Far East. Tobacco from North America, Sugar, rum and mahogany from the West Indies. Fish was brought by ship from Great Yarmouth and coal from Newcastle.
During the 19th century wool weaving and silk weaving rapidly declined. However leather working boomed. Norwich became famous for boot and shoe making. In the late 19th century an engineering industry grew up in Norwich and flourished. There was also a mustard making industry.
Norwich University (NU) is a private university located in Northfield, Vermont.The University of East Anglia on the outskirts of Norwich was one of the New Universities founded in 1963.The city also has an art college, the Norwich School of Art & Design, located in the centre.
Norwich is connected to Peterborough via King Lynn by the A47, the port of Ipswich by the A140, and Cambridge (and the motorway M11 to London) by the A11. Rail links to the rest of the country are via London Liverpool Street Station and Peterborough. Local lines also run to destinations including Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Sheringham and Cambridge. Norwich International Airport is a feeder to KLM Schiphol hub. FlyBe, Air SouthWest, Eastern Airways, and Bristow Helicopters all serve Norwich, in addition to a strong holiday charter flight business.
