Plymouth is a city in the southwest of England and is situated within the traditional county of Devon. It is located at the mouths of the rivers Plym and Tamar. Today the population of Plymouth is 250,000.
Plymouth began as fishing village. It belonged to the Prior of Plymton. (A prior was the head of a priory or small abbey). In the early 13th century the prior turned the village into a town by starting a market there. In 1254 Plymouth was given a charter. In 16th century,Fishing was the most important industry in Plymouth. However many other goods were imported into Plymouth such as wine, fruit, sugar and paper from France and Spain. Hemp for rope making was imported from the Baltic. Hops were imported from Holland. Wool and tin were exported from Plymouth.
Charles Church was built in 1664. In 1832 horse drawn buses began running in Plymouth. The railway reached Plymouth in 1848. After 1872 there were horse drawn trams. The first electric trams appeared in 1899. The first telephone exchange opened in 1881. The first council houses in Plymouth were built in Laira Road in 1896.
The Civic Centre was built in 1962. New Law Courts were built in 1963. A new Central Library was built in 1978. New Magistrates Courts were built in 1979. Plymouth General Hospital opened in 1981. The Armada Centre was built in 1988. Plymouth Dome opened in 1989. Plymouth Pavilions opened in 1991. Barbican Glass Works opened in 1997.
In 1914 the county boroughs of Plymouth and Devonport, and the urban district of East Stonehouse merged to form a single county borough of Plymouth.The City of Plymouth is divided into 20 wards, 17 of which elect three councillors and the other three electing two councillors, making up a total council of 57.
The University of Plymouth is the largest university in southwestern England. Plymouth railway station offers direct travel by First Great Western and Virgin Trains to Penzance in Cornwall and Paddington in London and links to the North of England by Virgin Trains.
