Sheffield is a major city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire in the north of England. The River Sheaf runs through the city. The population of the City is about 520,000 , according to the 2005 census.
Sheffield was founded in the early 12th century by the Lord of the manor, William de Lovetot. By 1296 a market had been established at what is now known as Castle Square, and Shefield Subsequently grew into a small market town.
In the 18th century Sheffield industries boomed. Sheffield was noted for its iron industry. Sheffield was granted a city charter in 1893.During the 19th century the old industries like iron continued to boom. Sheffield University was founded in 1905. Sheffield Museum of Popular Music opened in 1991.Sheffield City Airport opened in 1997. At the beginning of the 21st century Sheffield is noted for hi-tech manufacturing industry.
The city has a number of tourist attraction such as the Sheffield Winter Gardens and the Peace Gardens, Weston Park Museum, the Kelham Island Museum, the Sheffield Fire and Police Museum, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet and Shepherd Wheel.
Sheffield is governed by the elected Sheffield City Council. For most of the council history it has been controlled by the Labour Party. There was, however, a brief period of Liberal Democrat control at the turn of the century. There are 84 councillors. The city also has a Lord Mayor. In the past the Office of Mayor had considerable authority, and carried with it executive powers over the finances and affairs of the city council.
Sheffield has two universities, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. Sheffield has only two colleges: Longley Park Sixth Form College, opened in 2004, and Sheffield College, created from the merger of six colleges around the city, since reduced to just three: Castle College in the city centre, Hillsborough College and Norton College.
