Southampton is a city and channel port situated on the south coast of England. It lies near the head of Southampton Water where it is joined by the River Test and River Itchen. Today the population of Southampton is 217,000.
In the middle ages The main export from the town was wool. The main import was wine from France or Spain. In 1305 the merchants of Southampton said the prosperity of the town depended on wine.The goods were carried by pack horses (horses with bags loaded on their sides) and peasants pulled along two-wheeled carts full of hay and straw. From the early 14th century they brought luxuries like spices, perfume and silk to Southampton as well as cargoes like alum and woad (used in dyeing wool).
In the early 19th century many new shipyards were built along the Itchen. Gas streetlights existed from 1820. In 1836 the first modern police force was founded. In 1840 the railway reached Southampton. In 1838 the Royal South Hants hospital opened. In 1846 the first cemetery opened near the southern end of the Common. In 1889 the first public library in Southampton opened in St Marys Street. Trams ceased to run in Southampton in 1949. Flying boats ceased to operate in 1958. But the world first hovercraft flight took place in Southampton in 1959. In 1961 car ferries to France began running. In 1962 a hovercraft service to the Isle of Wight began.
Southampton Airport is a regional airport located in the town of Eastleigh, just north of Southampton. Local transport is largely road based, with significant peak hour congestion in the city. Southampton is also well served by the rail network, used by both freight services to and from the docks, and passenger services as part of the national rail system.
