Westminster is a district within the City of Westminster in London borough in England. It is the location of the Palace of Westminster and the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It is situated to the west of the City of London and north of the River Thames. According to the 2001 census the borough had a population of 181,000.
The name was historically used to describe the area around Westminster Abbey – the West Minster, or monastery church, that gave the area its name – which has been the seat of the government of England for almost a thousand years. since 1965 has included the former boroughs of St. Marylebone and Paddington.
Westminster and most of the major Government ministries situated in Westminster, centred on Whitehall. The City of Westminster is divided into 20 wards. The council is composed of 48 Conservative Party members and 12 Labour Party members.
Westminster is often used as shorthand for Parliament and the political community of the United Kingdom generally.
The nearby Palace of Westminster came to be the principal royal residence after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, and later housed the developing Parliament and law courts of England.
Westminster Education Department operates many primary and secondary schools. In addition, several voluntary-aided Church of England, Roman Catholic, and Christian non-denominational schools are in the city. Two community secondary schools, Pimlico School and Quintin Kynaston School, are in Westminster.
