Winchester is a historic city in southern England. It has a population of around 40,000. It is the seat of the City of Winchester local government district, which covers a much larger area, and is also the administrative capital and county town of Hampshire
Winchester began as a Roman town. It was built about 70 AD.The town of Winchester was named in honor of General James Winchester.In the 1950 and 1960 Winchester town centre was redeveloped.
There has been a Cathedral in Winchester since about 648 AD. The foundations of the current Cathedral were laid out in 1079 by Wakelin, the first Norman Bishop.
In the middle Ages the main industry in Winchester was making wool cloth. There were also many weavers, dyers, tailors and drapers in Winchester as well as butchers, grocers, carpenters, tilers, blacksmiths, shoemakers and goldsmiths. In Winchester there were weekly markets. By 1200 Winchester had a mayor.
Winchester has some important historic buildings include Winchester Cathedral, Royal Hampshire County Hospital and Winchester College.
There are some military and local museums such as Gurkha Museum, Royal Green Jackets, Royal Hussars, Royal Hampshire Regiment, Adjutant General Corps, City Museum, Westgate, Historic Resources Center, Guildhall Gallery and Malthy contemporary Art.
There are many educational institutes in Winchester- the Pilgrims School Winchester, Twyford, Prince Mead, Winchester College, Kings School Winchester, The Westgate School and Henry Beaufort.
Winchester has a station on the main line from London to Southampton, Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth. It is also served by long-distance services from Reading, Oxford, Birmingham and places further north.
